The paper’s front-page editorial notes that the Government of Kosovo failed in its plan to take away executive competencies from the EU Rule of Law mission in Kosovo. “The state of the judicial system was not seriously addressed and as a result Brussels did not find trustworthy the government’s platform to take away executive competencies from EULEX. Ruling parties, in cooperation with the opposition, had the opportunity to depoliticize the judiciary and secure the true independence of courts and prosecutions. But instead of encouraging reforms, they did the opposite. Instead of winning back the trust of the people, they dimmed the hope for rule of law. As a result, local institutions are now forced to support another two-year mandate for the EU mission. Politicians should learn from this in order to prevent the same thing from happening again in two years. The state must guarantee financial treatment and protection for judges and prosecutors, promote them based on their integrity, professionalism, courage and unbiased positions. Efforts to attract foreign investments will be futile as long as there is no order and justice. A republic cannot be democratic if a fistful of politicians and their friends challenge the law, while the majority is discriminated and suffers the consequences”.
