Editor Lavdim Hamidi argues in his opinion piece that the international community’s request to adopt the establishment in the Kosovo Assembly was aimed at measuring the political readiness of local institutions to address the matter, not that internationals would have given up on the establishment of the court. “The special court comes as a result of the failure of local courts which in the last 15 years failed to show the capacity and courage to investigate war crimes allegations … The establishment of the tribunal for war crimes allegedly committed by KLA members is among the lesser evils that Kosovo has experienced in the last 15 years. More damaging for the state of Kosovo was the creation of the association of Serb majority municipalities and which was passed by the assembly”. Hamidi goes on to criticize Prime Minister Hashim Thaci for making contradictory remarks when he said that the tribunal is damaging for Kosovo but that his MPs would vote in favor of the court. “He is not elected prime minister to make decisions that are damaging for the state, on the contrary he should be making favorable decisions. It would have been good if he said that PDK MPs would vote against the tribunal, because as a statesman he doesn’t want to send the message that he is obstructing international justice in Kosovo. After all, the tribunal would have happened even without Thaci”.
