Vjosa Osmani-Sadriu, member of the chairmanship of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), writes that the latest protests by Albanians in Skopje and other cities in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia show that more time is needed to achieve sustainable peace between people living there. “It is evident that peace cannot be achieved without respecting the basic rights of Albanians in Macedonia. Macedonian authorities are choosing not to respect the Ohrid Agreement that was reached through international mediation and supervision. Violence against Albanians is unacceptable and once again shows the logic of force which no longer has room in Western democracies or in a country that aspires to join the European Union. A similar logic, in fact a much harsher one, is being used against Albanians living in Presevo, Medvedja and Bujanovac, and they are unable to enjoy their most basic rights and are constantly subject to violation, humiliation, mistreatment and imprisonment … Unfortunately, the late and pale reaction by the outgoing government in Kosovo proved that its only priority is to get richer and to ruin relations with friendly countries, as was the latest case with Austria. Even in dialogue with Belgrade, the Thaci government proved it is not interested in the rights of Albanians, as it failed to table the issue of reciprocity for rights of Albanians in eastern Kosovo”.
