Former Chief Hague Prosecutor Carla del Ponte has said she would be willing to return to The Hague to prosecute the leaders of the KLA.

Asked whether she felt the need to go back to the courtroom for this reason, Del Ponte responded affirmatively in a statement for the Belgrade-based daily Večernje Novosti.

“Especially now that I’m in the UN Commission on Syria. I always thought that the victims need justice,” she added.

Speaking about a statement issued earlier this week by EULEX prosecutor Clint Williamson, Del Ponte said that he will have a difficult task to prove that trade in organs of kidnapped Serbs, Roma and “disloyal Albanians” in Kosovo took place, and that the main obstacle was that the victims’ bodies have not been found.

Addressing speculation that one of those indicted would be Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci, one of the former leaders of the ethnic Albanian KLA, the former prosecutor said she was not aware whether the investigation had determined who was responsible, but “thought that investigators identified suspects.”

Del Ponte added that if the gathering of evidence was complete, the indictment would concern crimes against humanity.

She expressed her hope that a tribunal for war crimes in Kosovo would be set up next year, which, as noted, “will depend on the political will in Kosovo.”
