During a private visit to Vatican, Kosovo President Atifete Jahjaga unsuccessfully tried to persuade Pope Francis to recognize the independence of Kosovo. During the meeting, which lasted 40 minutes, Jahjaga informed the Pope that Kosovo is now recognized by 108 countries and expressed hope that he supports “a vision of an independent Kosovo.” She particularly emphasized gratitude to Vatican for “the role it had in difficult times for Kosovo”.

According to the media writings, the Pope didn’t respond to Jahjaga’s request on recognition of Kosovo, which could produce a chain reaction of recognitions of Latin American countries. Moreover, Belgrade Archdiocese claim that the Vatican does not think about the recognition of Kosovo: “Our position on Kosovo is clear and has not changed,” was said from the Archdiocese of Catholic Church.

Columnist Bosko Jaksic also claims that we should believe in what Vatican said: “If the Catholic Church says there will be no recognition, then that is closed story. This consistent position could change only a major change in the current relations between Serbia and Kosovo, like signing of good neighbourly relations, as some western countries requested,” said Jaksic.
