Brussels-based correspondent for the paper, Augustin Palokaj, writes that although Kosovo has declared independence more than seven years ago, its statehood is still not completely finalized as far as its international recognition is concerned. The main problems in this regard concern Kosovo’s relations with three major international organizations: the UN, EU, and NATO. Kosovo has no formal relations with any of these organizations as an independent country. As a result, Kosovo cannot join NATO’s Partnership for Peace Programme and is the only country in the region that still doesn’t have the Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) signed with the EU. While reference to Kosovo being a sovereign country by the EU High Representative, Federica Mogherini, will not remove any of the formal obstacles in EU’s relations with Kosovo, Mogherini should make efforts to convince the five EU member states to recognise Kosovo as this would demonstrate EU’s unity on the issue.
