Brussels based correspondent of this daily, Augustin Palokaj, writes that at the time when the U.S. Vice-President, Joseph Biden, praised Serbia for its positive role in the region, especially for the efforts to reach reconciliation with its neighbors, they gained the momentum to rehabilitate Slobodan Milošević, the person who is considered to carry the main responsibility for the bloody crimes in the ex-Yugoslav territory, starting from repression in Kosovo, at the end of the eighties, then wars in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, to the bloodshed in Kosovo, which was stopped only after NATO military intervention.

“The efforts to rehabilitate a person who has gained the epithet “the butcher of Balkans” are being led by his former close collaborator, now Foreign Minister of Serbia, Ivica Dačić, but they are also supported by other politicians. Even those who are a bit reserved are not against Milošević,” writes Palokaj. “Despite the fact that current Serbian leaders have left in some occasions the impression that they want reconciliation with the neighbors and to leave behind their dark past, Slobodan Milosevic’s rehabilitation, rhetoric which induces hatred of neighbors, prove that these leaders are not sincere.” This is not a surprise, continues Palokaj, but what surprises us is silence of the European Union towards such behavior of Serbia.
