President of Kosovo, Hashim Thaci, called today a meeting of the National Council for European Integration and said that special effort need to be made to finalise the visa liberalization process as quickly as possible. He said that the current situation regarding the inability of the people of Kosovo to travel freely to European countries is “unjustifiable”.  “Since the outset of the dialogue on visa liberalization, we faced a different approach on the part of European Commission towards Kosovo because we were asked to implement double the amount of criteria compared to the countries in the region and faced a rigorous assessment method. Despite this, Kosovo, unlike any other country in the region, has implemented all the requested conditions,” said Thaci. With regards to the condition of ratifying the border demarcation agreement with Montenegro before being granted visa-free travel, Thaci said this is “completely unjust”. “I would like to ask the EU representatives and ambassadors of EU member states as to how many state borders have the countries in the region, including Serbia, Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina delimitated before benefiting from visa liberalization,” Thaci noted. He also said that the EU’s position that it has drawn lessons from previous cases is baseless because not even Georgia and Ukraine that stand to be granted visa-free travel this year have not delimitated their borders. He however pointed out that he thought the border demarcation agreement with Montenegro is fair and constitutional. “The obstacles and the delays in this process are of political nature and are only damaging the interest of the country and the citizens. I therefore, as President of the country, encourage institutions and political parties to overcome their differences and take the right decisions,” he added.
