Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee for Kosovo and Metohija Milovan Drecun says that he is concerned about new statement of US Secretary of Defense James Mathis that the recognition of Kosovo would be actualized before Serbia’s membership in the EU.

“Does this mean that the Trump’s administration will give up the former US stance not to exert pressure and not require from Serbian recognition of Kosovo? If it came to such a development of events, that would be a negative trend,” said Milovan Drecun for RTS.

He says that, judging by the statements of newly appointed officials, Trump’s administration will follow a policy of the previous administration on the issue of “Kosovo problem”, saying that some of them had unrealistic expectations, and that so-called independence of Kosovo, for the US is done deal.

Commenting on the statement of the new Secretary of Defense, James Mathis, who said that so-called Armed Forces of Kosovo should be formed, Drecun said it was not well mentioned that in this context it is necessary to change the Constitution.

“It looks like it will seek for a solution to avoid an obstacle in the parliament in Pristina for the formation of Armed Forces of Kosovo, and this obstacle is Serbian opposition. That would not be good,” said Drecun.

Speaking about the next round of negotiations between Belgrade and Pristina, Drecun said that they see positive signs that stabilization will be discussed, after incursion of special units on the north of Kosovo.

He said that the process of normalization of relations, stuck in two parts – no formation of the Serbian Association of Municipalities, as well as avoiding of new issues such as property and missing persons to be put on the agenda.

Drecun believes that the EU shall use all its capacity to force Pristina for rationally and predictable behavior.
