Political analysts in Kosovo and Serbia believe that Aleksandar Vucic’s victory in the Serbian presidential elections could have an impact on the ongoing talks between Pristina and Belgrade and that the whole process could be shifted at the level of presidents, also given Kosovo President Hashim Thaci’s increasing role in the process. Petrit Zogaj, Pristina-based political analyst, told the news agency: “I believe that in a not so distant future, we will have dialogue at the level of presidents. It is difficult to say if this will help the process of normalization of relations but what is evident is that both presidents, Thaci and Vucic, have great authority in their respective countries. Perhaps this will create room to reach complicated agreements which cannot be signed by anyone else except these two leaders,” Zogaj said. Driton Selmanaj, political analyst, said that from the beginning dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia was designed to conclude at the level of presidents and with a peace treaty. Belgrade-based political analyst, Dusan Janjic, told Radio Free Europe that Vucic is expected to engage in the process of talks with Pristina after his election as president. “Vucic is expected to speed up the process … There are 4 to 5 big topics that are expected to be addressed. And above all, put pressure and control on the implementation of the agreeements that have already been reached,” Janjic said. “This is certainly related to the problem with the responsibility of the president. In the constitutional aspect, he cannot do this. But it seems that there will be a rearrangement of the team, the same way as in Pristina, with the appointment of a political negotiator that would help the President and certainly the reorganization of the Office for Kosovo”. The news agency recalls that several weeks ago, the Kosovo Assembly adopted a resolution calling for the suspension of dialogue with Belgrade, until former Kosovo Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj is released from detention in France where he is kept based on a Serbian arrest warrant.
