The U.S. Ambassador to Kosovo, Greg Delawie, assessed the statements for the possibility of unification of Kosovo with Albania, as “imprudent”.
“The U.S. Government supports the sovereignty of Kosovo and Albania. We are against imprudent discussions for unification and exaggerated reactions towards such statements, which mine sustainability in the region,” Delawie said.
His reaction came after Edi Rama’s statement in an interview for politico.eu that if the hope and perspective for integration of the region in the EU is diminished, then minor unions could occur. After this, Kosovo’s President Hashim Thaci also said for RFE that if the EU shuts doors to Kosovo, then all Albanians in the region will be living in a single space.
Lajmi.net also reports that the U.S. Ambassador to Albania, Donald Lu, criticized Prime Minister Edi Rama for the statement. “The U.S. Government supports the sovereignty of Kosovo and Albania. We are against any imprudent discussions for unification. They impede stability of the region and European path for both countries,” Lu was quoted as saying.
