Kosovo has applied for Interpol membership, however, Donika Emini from Kosovo Center for Security Studies (KCSS) considers cooperation between the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and that of the Internal Affairs to be problematic.

According to her, there is a need for better coordination of these two ministries, in order for Kosovo to succeed. “Kosovo has only two months’ time to convince member states that it should become part of the Interpol, which is a very short period,” Emini said. She added further that the Ministry for Foreign Affairs should be leading the process, while the Ministry of Internal Affairs should engage on lobbying through attachés at different countries.

According to Emini, chances for Kosovo’s membership at Interpol are big. “From the professional aspect, Kosovo fulfilled all the conditions, work is required only from the political aspect. Regulations at Interpol have changed and Kosovo has great chances, especially for the fact that UN membership is not a must,” Emini said.
