EU Urges Kosovo to End Political Deadlock (Balkan Insight)

The European Union said Kosovo MPs should end the political deadlock preventing the formation of a new government because the country has “no time to lose” to press ahead with vital reforms.

“Kosovo has no time to lose,” the EU Foreign Affairs and Security Policy office told BIRN as Kosovo remained without a government two months after holding general elections.

The Kosovo Assembly has failed five times so far to appoint a parliamentary speaker, a process that would open the way to establish the new government.

The political deadlock is preventing work on vital issues such as the economy and visa liberalisation with the EU.

“We expect the new government, once formed, to work immediately towards reforms related to the rule of law and the economy, to deliver on visa liberalisation and to constructively engage in the dialogue with Serbia,” the EU Foreign Affairs and Security Policy office said.

“All this is crucial for Kosovo to make headway on its European path,” it added.

It urged parliamentary parties to act responsibly and fulfil their legal and constitutional obligations.
