The news website runs a press release issued by the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) which notes: “On the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) and Head of UNMIK, Zahir Tanin, stated that ‘our thoughts are with the families and friends of persons still missing in Kosovo. The families have a right to know what happened to their loved ones. This is a fundamental human right’. 1,658 persons remain unaccounted for as a result of the conflict in Kosovo in 1998/1999. Reaffirming the UN’s commitment to support the search for the missing, SRSG Tanin stated that ‘UNMIK will continue to support the Working Group on Missing Persons and to assist the families of missing persons, in particular through funding of the Missing Persons Resource Centre in Pristina for the coming year. We commend and encourage the efforts of those working together to discover the fate of those still missing’.
