Statement attributable to UNMIK’s Spokesperson regarding the series of incidents in Kosovo

Pristina, 21 January 2013 – UNMIK condemns the series of recent incidents throughout Kosovo involving the desecration of cemeteries, vandalism of historical monuments, and threats thereof.

These reprehensible acts harm Kosovo’s European aspirations and are counter to universal values. We welcome the statement of the Kosovo police appealing for respect for all religious and cultural heritage sites. We also expect further measures to be taken, not only to identify the perpetrators of these despicable acts, but also to take preventive measures to stop any further incidents from occurring. UNMIK strongly encourages leaders of all communities to undertake actions to reduce tensions and to promote respect for the rule of law and for all communities in Kosovo.
