The European Commission (EC), that declared the referendum in Catalonia as anti-constitutional, claims that the case of the Spanish province and Kosovo “are not comparable,” Serbian media reported today.

The EC further elaborated on its stance by saying “Spain is a member state of the EU”.

“When it comes to the recognition of Kosovo, it was a very specific context. It was a position adopted by different UN declarations and different UN resolutions and international community. Very specific context, with specific reasons,” stated the spokesperson of the European Commission, Margaritis Shinas, but did not explain what UN declarations and resolutions he had in mind, nor what the “specifics” are that he had mentioned.

The European Commission in its declaration today, said, that taking into consideration the Spanish Constitution, yesterday’s voting in Catalonia “was not legal,” Serbian media reported.

“For the European Commission this is an internal issue of Spain that must be resolved in line with Constitutional laws of Spain. We repeat the position of the current and the former European Commission, and it is, in case this referendum was organized in line with the Spanish Constitution, it would mean that this territory leaving away would be outside of the EU,” Shinas said, while explaining the EC position.

In addition to this, the clearly legal aspect of the case, the European Commission sends a message the time is now “for unity and stability, and not for divisions and fragmentation,” Serbian media reported.
