Reactions of the EU and the member states to the referendum in Catalonia are unanimous – they are for the constitutional unity of Spain, as French President Emanuel Macron said. The EC spokesman points out that Kosovo and Catalonia cannot be compared, reports RTS.
“Everything that we say about double standards should not be interpreted as an objection to the preservation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Spain. Spain is our great friend and, unlike some other EU member states, did not recognize the unilaterally declared independence of Kosmet,” said Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dačić visiting the RTS News.
He points out that this is a unilateral act of Catalonia, as was the unilateral act of Kosovo.
“We were warning, and today we warn that this Pandora’s Box will not stop in Serbia, that is, in the case of Kosovo, there are many of such cases. The United Kingdom has dissolved the Parliament of Ireland because it has brought a decision of independence, many other countries have differing attitudes regarding their problems in relation to what was in Kosovo,” Dačić said.
Commenting the words of European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas who said that Kosovo was a specific case and that “it was a position adopted by various UN declarations and different UN resolutions and the international community,” Dačić pointed that this is not true.
“Kosovo cannot be a separated and a specific case; there are no resolutions of the UN Security Council. I think that the representative of the European Commission has no idea what he is talking about. He read it somewhere, he cannot explain and therefore he talks nonsense. There are no UN resolutions other than Resolution 1244 which speaks about the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Serbia. What has been done to Serbia is a violation of international law. What we were warning about – it happened, and Catalonia will not be the only example of such separatist tendencies in Europe,” Dačić said.
Dačić does not expect some of the 22 EU member states that have recognized Kosovo’s independence now to change their minds.
“Absolutely not, it’s an unrealistic expectation. They will go on mistaking until the end. How will they say ‘we made a mistake’ – they would have to spit on themselves. This can say Trump for former US politics, some new leadership, but that was the essence of their policy. They bombard us for the sake of Kosovo, they will not say now that they have made a mistake. We are sorry about Spain, because this is our friendly country, but Pandora’s Box has been opened. To the observation that the EU had no reaction to the conduct of Spanish police, Dačić said that, when their interests were concerned, they would find ways to justify it.
“We should not interfere in the internal affairs of Spain. It is well known why we are against this kind of method in Catalonia because it is not in accordance with international law and because those are unilateral actions, as it was in Kosovo,” Dačić said.
Commenting on the graffiti in Vojvodina and departure of LSV leader Nenad Čanak to Barcelona, Dačić said that it was not a “grotesque policy only in Brussels,” but that there are representatives and here (Serbia).
“When the RS talks in clouds about the referendum, then it is anti-European, anti-civilizational and anti-Serb. Let them go to Banja Luka to support the referendum of Serbs in BiH,” Dačić said.
The demand that Kosovo be admitted to UNESCO has not yet been submitted because, as Dačić says, Pristina interprets that it can submit a request at the General Conference itself.
“Let them try, I do not provoke anyone, but I am sure that those who previously recognized Kosovo, and the worst situation is in the EU because they are hypocrites, were supporting the creation of Kosovo because they wanted a weak Serbia in the Balkans, but they will not succeed in it,” Dačić concluded.
