Former Vetevendosje leader, Visar Ymeri, reacted against today’s verdict of the Basic Court in Pristina which found guilty Vetevendosje MPs – Albin Kurti, Albulena Haxhiu, Donika Kadaj-Bujupi and Faton Topalli, for throwing teargas canisters in the Kosovo Assembly. Kurti and Kadaj-Bujupi were sentenced to 1.5 years jail time, while Haxhiu was sentenced to 1 year and three months, and Topalli to one year and two months. All of the sentences are conditional, meaning that they will not be served in jail but that the convicted will have a two year probation period. Ymeri wrote in Facebook post that the verdict is the best indicator of the political motives behind the case. “The verdict and these judges is the best evidence of political control over the judiciary … This verdict is the most hypocrite act by a local institution so far and it constitutes persecution against political opponents,” Ymeri wrote.
