Igor Sholtes, the European Parliament’s Special Rapporteur on Kosovo, told Deutsche Welle that the EU Mission in Kosovo and the Quint countries are deeply concerned with the idea to revoke the law on the special court for war crimes. “This would mean a huge step backwards for Kosovo. This decision would be in direct opposition to the principles of rule of law and it would hurt Kosovo’s credibility as an equal partner with the EU. I think this decision will seriously jeopardize the progress achieved in Kosovo in the last couple of years. I think the chapter of the past needs to be closed. Therefore I call on leaders of institutions and political parties in Kosovo not to allow this decision because this would send Kosovo towards isolation and not cooperation,” he said. Sholtes recalled that several Quint representatives have made it clear that a decision to revoke the law would mean grave consequences for Kosovo. “The rule of law and the fight against corruption and organized crime are chapters in which Kosovo needs to do a lot more. Therefore such activities would be very bad signs in terms of respecting international law and obligations. I think this would also have a negative impact on Kosovo’s further negotiations with the EU”. Sholtes said a Kosovo Assembly delegation, consisting of the ruling coalition and the opposition, will visit the European Parliament today and that EP members will explain to them all the possible consequences if a decision is made to revoke the court. “We will make it clear in a joint resolution that such a decision must not be made,” he said.
