The Spanish paper El Confidencial reported that Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has lost the battle in trying to prevent Kosovo from receiving state treatment in the upcoming EU-Western Balkans summit in Sofia, Bulgaria. The paper wrote that Rajoy has made it clear his partners would not sit down at the table alongside the Kosovo President, Hashim Thaci, but that “his insistence has been in vain.” As a sign of protest over Kosovo, the Spanish Prime Minister is expected to travel to Sofia and take attend the dinner with European leaders a day ahead of the summit and then leave. The paper also reported that while an official confirmation of this is yet to be announced by authorities in Madrid, Brussels has already been notified of Rajoy’s absence from the main event.
