The news website covers today’s conference in Pristina organized by the Gender Training and Research Center on civil society’s contribution to peace and interethnic harmony with special emphasis on dialogue between the Albanian and Serb communities. Edita Tahiri, former chief negotiator of Kosovo in the EU-brokered talks with Serbia, said women must play a central role in efforts to build sustainable peace. “The process of dialogue has helped Kosovo wield its sovereignty in the north and through dialogue we managed to dissolve Serbian parallel structures there. Dialogue resulted in establishing the judiciary and the border crossing points in the north. There was not sufficient representation of women in the process of dialogue, neither from Kosovo nor from Serbia. Kosovo passed a good test when it appointed a chief negotiator, myself, whereas the post of Serbia’s chief negotiator was always held by men. I believe this will change in the final phase of dialogue, which will conclude with mutual recognition,” Tahiri said. Driton Lajci, advisor to Kosovo Assembly President Kadri Veseli, said peace has been reached and called for greater cooperation between Kosovo Albanians and Serbs. “Dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia is important for interethnic harmony. Our reconciliation with the Serbs is very important. This is why we encourage cooperation between the universities, institutions, the youth, and for young people to learn the language of their peers,” he added.
