Serbia’s Prime Minister Ana Brnabic has said on Wednesday she believes that “if and when” Belgrade agrees on a compromise with Pristina, the people will stand by their President and Government.
In an interview with the Belgrade Vecernje Novosti daily on the occasion of the first year of her premiership, Brnabic said it would not be any cabinet reshuffle “as long as the battle for Kosovo is going on.”
She said it “could happen that people reject a legally binding agreement with Pristina, but that it would be better if they take up the responsibility for their future.”
Talking about the Belgrade – Pristina ongoing dialogue, Brnabic said she saw no reason for any other country to get involved in the process mediated by the European Union.
But, she added, if the US got involved as Pristina had requested, the other two big powers, Russia and China, should also take part.
The EU has said that Belgrade – Pristina dialogue at the highest level could continue this month, but both Serbia’s and Kosovo’s presidents Aleksandar Vucic and Hashim Thaci respectively were not optimistic after the last Brussels meeting in June.
Although no ruling politician in Serbia has directly said that an eventually reached legally binding accord on normalisation of relations with Pristina would have to get peoples’ approval on a referendum, they have kept saying that the nation would have to decide.
