Štrpce/Shtërpcë: Situation with medicine worse than ever (TV Most)

Shipments of medicine for health centers in southern Kosovo were confiscated several times in last couple years at administrative crossings, because they were not accompanied with relevant permits issued by the Kosovo Ministry of Health. Situation in Štrpce/Shtërpcë seems to be worse than ever. “The last shipment of medicine dates 5 December 2013. That shipment was meant to cover six months, thus almost no medicine is left in pharmacies and we don’t know when the next shipment will take place. We have certain medicaments for next two months, but we’ve run out of medicine in tablets,” said medical authorities. “Inhabitants in Štrpce/Shtërpcë region mostly need therapies for cardiovascular diseases, insulin is on minimum, whereas antibiotics have run out. Actually, we need all sorts of medicine,” said pharmacists. Dissatisfaction of patients is growing, particularly of those with chronic diseases who are supposed to receive daily therapies. “Nothing can be found in the state-run pharmacies, however those privately-run are well supplied, thus we manage to survive,” said patients. As long as such situation continues in Štrpce/Shtërpcë, patients will be forced to look for the medicine they need in Kosovska Mitrovica or Serbia proper.
