A spokesperson for the European Union told Front Online on Thursday that the political and security situation in the north of Kosovo in 2025 was generally stable but that it remains fragile and requires responsible leadership and full respect for democratic processes and the rule of law.
The EU positively assessed the local elections, especially those in the north of Kosovo. “We also welcomed the smooth handover of local government in the four municipalities in the north of Kosovo,” the spokesperson said. “We expect the new mayors to represent the interests of all citizens in line with Kosovo laws same as in any other municipality in Kosovo”.
The spokesperson also said that “in 2026, we expect further steps toward a transparent, inclusive and sustainable integration of Kosovo Serbs in Kosovo’s institutions, starting with the judges, prosecutors, administrative staff and the police”.

Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani, in a post on X, congratulated Denmark on the successful conclusion of its EU Presidency and thanked Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen “for her leadership in promoting Europe’s security and unity, as well as a credible, merit-based enlargement process”.
