Assembly fails to elect new president due to lack of quorum, Haxhiu addresses court (RFE)

The leading story in all media on Thursday night was the failure of the Kosovo Assembly to elect the new President of Kosovo due to lack of quorum. Earlier in the day, Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani had asked the Assembly to adopt constitutional amendments that would enable the election of the president directly by the people. The proposed amendments did not pass in the Assembly and then the Vetevendosje Movement proposed another candidate for the post of President. In order to start the vote on the president, the law provides that at least 80 MPs need to be present in the room, but opposition MPs walked out. Assembly Speaker Albulena Haxhiu then stopped the session due to lack of quorum. Later she announced that she had asked the Constitutional Court to temporarily suspend the constitutional deadlines for the election of the president. The Assembly now needs to elect a president within 60 days, or Kosovo goes to new elections again.

PDK caucus chief: Kosovo needs to go to new elections (Nacionale)

PDK caucus chief Arian Tahiri said on Thursday that Kosovo needs to go to new elections after the election of the president failed. “The Assembly failed to elect a president. This came as a result of the lack of readiness by the main political parties. As foreseen by the Constitution, the country now needs to go to elections because it could not elect a president within the constitutional deadlines,” Tahiri said.

NATO denies missiles were launched from Kosovo; “fake claim” (Telegrafi)

NATO denied a claim made in some social media according to which NATO fired missiles from Camp Bondsteel toward Iran. A NATO official said that Secretary General Mark Rutte has made it clear that the Alliance is not involved in the ongoing aerial campaign against the regime in Iran. “This is a fake claim and we rebuke it completely. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has made it clear that NATO is not involved in the current aerial campaign against the Iranian regime. KFOR continues to implement its mandate to contribute to a safe and sustainable environment for all people living in Kosovo,” the official said.

Kosovo marks 28th anniversary of attack on Jashari family in Prekaz (Prishtina Insight)

On Thursday, Kosovo began three days of commemorations marking the 28th anniversary of the killing of 59 members of the Jashari family during the 1998 siege by Serbian police and military forces in Prekaz, which lasted from March 5 to March 7, an event commemorated as the “KLA Epopee”. The commemorations started with solemn sessions by the Government, the Assembly of Kosovo, and a ceremony at the Adem Jashari barracks, attended by the leaders and members of the government cabinet. Activities will continue until March 7, including visits to the Jashari Memorial Complex in Prekaz and concluding with the traditional “Night of Fires.”

At the barracks ceremony, President Vjosa Osmani said that the Jashari family chose sacrifice rather than the easier path. “Today we remember the price of freedom and the oath that was made so that we live free and with dignity. [The Jashari family] did not choose the easy path, but sacrifice, confrontation and above all else, immortality,” Osmani said.

“In Prekaz, the legendary commander Adem Jashari, and his family turned their home into a fortress of resistance and their blood into the seal of our freedom and independence,” she added. Osmani also described the Kosovo Liberation Army as “the voice of an oppressed population.”

Prime Minister Albin Kurti said March 5 is not only a day of honouring the fallen but also a moment to reflect on Kosovo’s past and future. “In the modern history of Kosovo, the Epic of the KLA represents the most decisive moment on the path toward freedom in Kosovo during the 20th century,” Kurti said.

KSF expected to be part of International Stabilization Force; “a strategic achievement” (RTK)

Kosovo’s Minister of Defense, Ejup Maqedonci, said in an interview with RTK on Thursday that the deployment of the Kosovo Security Force (KSF) as part of the International Stabilization Force in Gaza is a strategic achievement. He said this would be the first mission for the KSF abroad as part of an UN-authorized operation in cooperation with the United States of America. “This stabilization force is being built based on a UN resolution. The resolution was sponsored by the US to create a stabilization force, and we are one of the founding members of the force,” Maqedonci said.

Maqedonci also said that early this week he sent to the Kosovo government a recommendation for a political decision on the KSF deployment. “The political decision then needs to go through other phases of authorization by the Kosovo Assembly and then a final approval by the President of Kosovo. We are currently in the final phase of coordination and identifying the capacities we will have in Gaza,” he said.

Djuric and Berset discuss position and concerns of Serbs in Kosovo (Kosovo Online)

Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs Marko Djuric on Thursday met with Secretary General of the Council of Europe Alain Berset and discussed the situation of Serbs in Kosovo and “concerns arising from actions by Pristina that call into question the functioning of the education and healthcare systems”.

“I informed Mr. Berset and our colleagues from the Council of Europe about the position of our people in Kosovo and Metohija and about our concerns regarding the problems that have emerged due to the questioning of the functioning of the education and healthcare systems. I believe it is very important that the conduct of all parties with regard to the protection of fundamental rights be placed under scrutiny and, where necessary, be subject to both suggestions and criticism. We make no exception even for ourselves in this regard; we do not seek a different treatment than the one we expect to apply to others. In that sense, I am grateful to our interlocutors for patiently listening to what constitutes the state position of Serbia on this matter,” Djuric said at a joint press conference with Berset.

Hidden gold worth millions uncovered in a Kosovo town raid (Prishtina Insight)

A coordinated raid undertaken in four locations on February 13 uncovered 30 kilograms of gold hidden in secret compartments behind cabinets and inside safes. While, another 20 kilograms displayed in jewelry shops was seized for examination because it lacked the official stamps required by law.

In total, around 50 kilograms of gold, worth approximately 5 million euros, were found during the operation targeting two jewelry businesses and the homes of their owners.

Exclusive footage documenting the operation carried out by Kosovo’s police, tax administration, trade inspectors, and the Peja prosecution was broadcast on the “Kallxo Përnime” TV Programme on March 1, 2026.

According to the Peja Prosecution, 30 kilograms of gold were found hidden in secret compartments built inside the business premises and the owners’ houses. Because the gold had been concealed and not declared to customs authorities, it was immediately confiscated as contraband.
