The UN Security Council has adopted a resolution on sexual violence in conflict. The approval was made possible after a clause referring to women’s reproductive health was dropped, so as to avoid U.S. veto. The resolution was proposed by Germany and received 13 votes in favour, none against and two abstentions from Russia and China.

A delegation from Kosovo, led by former president Atifete Jahjaga, attended the discussion on the resolution at the UN Headquarters in New York. In a Facebook post, Jahjaga said: “Today, at the Open Debate on Sexual Violence in Conflict of the United Nations Security Council, we stand on behalf of around 20,000 heroines and survivors of sexual violence during war in Kosovo. Your extraordinary force is a motivation to always seek ways to share your stories and call for justice, until justice is served.”
