Daniel Serwer, former U.S. diplomat and Balkans analyst, during a security conference in Pristina on Thursday, argued against initiatives for border correction or land swaps between Kosovo and Serbia, the news website reports. “To your President [Thaci] I say this: Vucic [Serbian President] cannot give you what you want in southern Serbia, and you cannot give him what he wants in northern Kosovo. Such an agreement could not be ratified by parliament or by a referendum,” Serwer said. He further argued that such ideas could threaten the security of the region and beyond. “The exchange of people and territories on ethnic basis would not only prove that Pristina and Belgrade are incapable of treating their citizens fairly, but it would also cause instability in Bosnia, Georgia, Moldavia and Ukraine … Only [Russian] President Putin would welcome such an initiative. The exchange of territories would put into question the future of Serbs south of Ibar River, and that of Albanians living in southern Serbia,” Serwer said.
