The news website reports that civil society organizations have decided to suspend their participation in the works of the Kosovo Assembly ad-hoc committee on improving and strengthening the election process. Civil society organizations said in a statement that their decision comes in light of the recent developments surrounding the draft law on the funding of political parties. The statement notes: “We believe that the current draft law is in opposition with the spirit of the Constitution and the election reform initiated by the Kosovo Assembly. The draft law undermines the key principles of political life by threatening the integrity of the entire election reforms process, including threatening the independence of the Office for the Registration of Political Entities. The current draft law fails to address the European Reforms Agenda (ERA) priorities for transparency, accountability, efficient implementation and sanctioning of the funding of political parties, enabling the political entities to conceal the identity of their financial contributors, increasing the ceiling of such contributions, extending the deadlines for publishing financial reports of campaigns and reducing the fines when political parties violate the legislation … As the draft law on the funding of political entities cannot be seen separately from the Election Reform, and threatens this process, we want the draft law to be withdrawn or not voted by members of the Kosovo Assembly”.
