The news website reports that Pristina-based NGO INJECT [Initiative for Justice and Equality] organized a conference in Pristina today to discuss the role of institutions in addressing cases of domestic violence. Minister of Justice Abelard Tahiri and Interior Minister Ekrem Mustafa did not show up at the conference despite having confirmed their participation. INJECT director Luljeta Aliu told RTK that the absence of the two ministers shows their lack of commitment. “I have no comment, this shows their commitment. I hoped the ministers would attend and see the violation of women’s rights. Today we will talk about the victimization of women in the institutions. If the institutions tasked with defending them fail, then their rights to life fail too. Those that have experienced domestic violence find it very difficult to reveal these violations. These are not stories, these are facts. These women are fighting a war with the institutions and the state,” Aliu said. Kosovo Ombudsperson Hilmi Jashari said domestic violence is one of the most pressing problems in Kosovo society. He added that when state authorities failed to act on certain cases they ended up in fatalities.
