Western Balkans analyst Bodo Weber said in an interview to the news website that EU foreign diplomacy chief nominee, Josep Borrell, will help Serbia understand the reality of an independent Kosovo, “as accepting this reality is the only way to reach a final and comprehensive settlement that will ensure long-term peace in the Western Balkans and Europe”. Weber said that although Borrell is from Spain, a country that hasn’t recognised Kosovo, he is a person with high European virtues, and recalled Borrell’s position against the idea of land swap between Kosovo and Serbia. Weber also said the Spanish diplomat will make it easier for Belgrade to make certain difficult steps in the political dialogue with Kosovo. “As a Catalan, he knows very well how dangerous ethnic-territorial solutions can be … I really hope he will understand that the only solution for Kosovo and Serbia in terms of reaching a truly comprehensive and sustainable final agreement – a peace agreement in essence – is for such an agreement to be based on reality and that is that Kosovo is and will remain an independent state. His new position will help Serbia move forward by accepting reality and this would be the ground for long-term peace in the Western Balkans in particular and Europe in general,” Weber said.
