Workers at the state-owned Kosovo Telecom company have started a new 24-hour strike in protest against the reported signing on Monday of a new contract with the private mobile network provider Z Mobile. The first contract was signed in 2009 and is about to expire.
“We do not want any type of contract with Z Mobile. The damage done [to Telecom] by Z Mobile is publicly known and we cannot accept a new contract,” Lamih Balaj, head of the Kosovo Telecom trade union, told BIRN.
Kosovo TV station RTK reported on Sunday that Telecom had offered a contract with new terms to Z Mobile. It said the new contact anticipates Z Mobile recognizing a debt to Telecom of 12 million euros, which was not recognized before; 80 per cent of the profits would now go to Telecom and 20 per cent to Z Mobile. Before, the ratio was 77 per cent to Z Mobile and 23 per cent to Telecom. Z Mobile has not yet said whether it will accept the offer, RTK said.
