The Institute of Forensic Medicine (IFM) in cooperation with Kosovo Police and EULEX held a roundtable in Pristina today for greater awareness-raising on sexual violence, several news websites report. Tarja Formisto, IFM deputy director from EULEX, said more work is needed on awareness-raising for sexual violence. “I have two messages for you: first, now is the time to invest in young people, and second, it is time to raise public awareness on sexual violence and how to report on cases of sexual violence,” she said. Formisto said preventive measures are needed against sexual abuse. “Each of us have a role to play in protecting children and young people from the trauma and pain of sexual abuse. Together we can build a better future for all,” she added. Former Kosovo President Atifete Jahjaga said everyone must unite in restoring hope among the survivors of sexual violence. “We are here today to give our support to survivors of sexual violence, but we need to hear more from the victims,” she said. Jahjaga added the survivors are reluctant to talk about the crimes committed against them and that they need greater institutional support. “Two decades have passed and the wounds of thousands of women and men violated during the war have yet to be healed. The victims have yet to make peace with the past … There were attempts to silence their truths … we need to break the silence and help every victim to tell their story … We also need to work with the families of the victims,” she said. IFM Director Arsim Gerxhaliu said victims must immediately report cases of sexual violence because the biological evidence does not remain on the body for long. Forensics expert Bergita Curri said women are most threatened from sexual violence. “59 percent of victims are 11 – 16 years old,” she said.
