Christian Schwarz – Schilling, former High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, said in an interview to Deutsche Welle that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s decision to appoint Matthew Palmer as a special representative for the Western Balkans should serve as motivation for the Western Balkans to find solutions to their problems and that the EU should appoint a special envoy for the Pristina – Belgrade dialogue. Schilling said the European Union must be more energetic in resolving problems and integrate the Western Balkans, adding that the U.S. initiative in the 1990s helped push the region on the right direction. “Experience has shown that only solutions agreed by the U.S. and Europe are successful and sustainable,” he said. Schilling said Washington does not want to leave the Western Balkans to fall under Russia’s influence and that U.S. President Trump wants to score another victory before the 2020 presidential elections. Asked to comment on initiatives for land swap or border correction based on ethnic lines between Kosovo and Serbia, Schilling said he had warned about this threat even earlier and that Matthew Palmer recently brought to the Balkans the message that Washington does not want monoethnic states. The German diplomat also said it is high time for Serbs in Kosovo to speak with their own voice and not expect directives from Belgrade.
