Stipe Mesic, former President of Croatia, in an interview to Deutsche Welle, commented on developments in the Western Balkans. He said the problem of Bosnia and Herzegovina must be resolved as it is one of the most complex issues in the region. He criticised Belgrade’s policy toward Bosnia, saying that on the one hand Serbs say they respect a unified Bosnia and Herzegovina, and on the other hand, they support the policies of Milorad Dodik who does not recognise Bosnia as a state. Mesic said borders in the Western Balkans cannot be touched and recalled that all wars in Europe began because of borders. “Absolutely. All wars in Europe began because of borders. And all aggressors lied by claiming that they were protecting national minorities in other countries. But then they invaded the territories of other countries. They lied,” he said. Mesic argued that former Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic tried to create a Greater Serbia but that despite a powerful army he could not change the borders of the former Yugoslav republics and provinces. “So when Milosevic and his powerful army could not change the borders, no one can change them now,” he added.
