Artists and cultural activists from Kosovo have been using their work to address the traumas of the wartime past – but collaborations with Serbian artists intended to bridge post-war divides have sometimes sparked angry reactions.
Milica Djurdjevic of the far-right Serbian political organisation Zavetnici was angry.
Djurdjevic was addressing a protest rally in May in Belgrade against the opening of the annual ‘Miredita, Dobar Dan’ festival in the Serbian capital – an event intended to bring Serbs and Kosovo Albanians closer together through culture.
“This festival makes sure that it emphasises that Kosovo is an independent country, thus falsifying history and blaming Serbia for everything that happened back then in Kosovo [during the 1998-99 war],” Djurdjevic said.
