The news website reports that U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy for the Kosovo – Serbia talks, Richard Grenell, and the envoy for the Western Balkans, Matthew Palmer, will visit Kosovo today and are scheduled to meet President Hashim Thaci and leaders of political parties. Jeta Krasniqi from the Kosovo Democratic Institute told the news website that the visit is proof that Washington wants the dialogue to resume immediately after the formation of the new government in Pristina. “In their meetings in Kosovo today, and in Serbia tomorrow, they will certainly discuss the issue of dialogue. They have made it clear in their statements that the U.S. want the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia on an eventual agreement to resume immediately after the formation of the government. We have also seen that a timeline has been discussed for the process and possibly be concluded around the time of general elections in Serbia in spring next year,” Krasniqi said. “They will come to see in meetings with President Thaci and with other political leaders their positions on this process, and the possibility of bringing back the parties to the table of dialogue as soon as possible. We have seen pressure but also support from the U.S. on the process of dialogue. Kosovo has continuously asked for the U.S. to be involved in the dialogue. Now we have the support of our allies, but we must know how to turn this support into our own benefit”. Krasniqi also said that Kosovo’s representatives must build a unified approach, determine what they want and then lobby for that position. “In the past we haven’t see leaders turning the international support into our own interest, as President Thaci had a different thesis from that of the government. This certainly damaged our position. So we must know how to turn international support into our interest because concluding the process of dialogue is in our interest too. This doesn’t mean we need to rush into any agreement, but we must insist for this agreement to be in the interest of the state of Kosovo, its citizens and an agreement that further strengthens Kosovo on the international arena”. Naim Rashiti, a political commentator based in Pristina, wrote in a Facebook post that the U.S. envoys will want to know what broad-based team President Thaci and Prime Minister Kurti will create. “The U.S. envoys will test the readiness of all actors on the dialogue and their cooperation. They will want to know what broad-based team President Thaci and Prime Minister Kurti will create,” he wrote.
