Reactions to Serbia’s parliamentary elections in Kosovo

(All monitored broadcasters, KTV)

Serbia’s Sunday’s elections that were held also in Kosovo, provoked reactions by people’s representatives in the Kosovo Assembly. The Assembly Speaker Jakup Krasniqi said that citizens need to be told the truth, and he made a comparison between Serbs and Kosovars with dual citizenship.

“Albanians of the Republic of Kosovo who have also Albania’s citizenship go to Albania to vote, they do not vote in Kosovo. I think that the same should apply for the others,” Krasniqi said.

Ismet Beqiri of LDK said that on this occasion Kosovo’s sovereignty was infringed, and that the government avoided its responsibility.

“They were irresponsible even in their statements in various ways. They changed their stance several times, until they came up with the very interesting wording ‘ballot collection’,” said Beqiri.

Ahmet Isufi of AAK also says that Kosovo’s sovereignty was violated. He qualified the Government’s behaviour as irresponsible.

However, the PDK caucus leader Adem Grabovci says that the country’s sovereignty has not been violated. According to him, the Kosovo Constitution and legislation was respected.

MLGA gives deadline to north municipalities

(All monitored broadcasters, KTV)

North municipalities have to amend their statutes, since Ministry of local government administration (MLGA) identified procedural violations. MLGA has submitted request for amendment to the municipality of Leposavic/Leposaviq and Zvecan/Zveçan, giving them a 30-day deadline. In case the deadline is not respected, the municipalities may go through extraordinary elections.

MLGA officials stated that the violations are mostly about municipal stamps and emblems.

The letters sent from MLGA require municipalities to amend those articles of the statute that are not compatible with the legislation. After including the changes, municipal assemblies should sent confirmation act to the MLGA. Within a 30-day deadline north municipalities must amend their statutes; otherwise, the Government may request it through court procedures. Another option is calling extraordinary elections.

MLGA has notified relevant stakeholders about this action, including the EU.
