The news website reports that the safety of reporters in Kosovo is not a satisfactory level and that law enforcement mechanisms are not efficient enough in protecting reporters and bringing the perpetrators of attacks against reporters to justice. In light of recent attacks, reporters are looking into the possibility of taking own measures for their security, be it by getting licensed guns or hiring security details. Parim Olluri, director of Pristina-based news website Insajderi, told Telegrafi that shortcomings by the prosecution and the police have led to an unsafe environment for reporters. He added that thugs and criminals are encouraged by the fact that they are not being punished and that members of different criminal groups are in a position to attack reporters. Olluri said if security mechanisms fail to do their job, reporters will have to think about their own security. “Police have advised me to get a licensed gun,” he said, adding that hiring a security detail is another possibility. Imer Mushkolaj, political analyst, said recent attacks against reporters are indicators of threats coming from businesses and other groups of interest. He said security institutions are unfortunately failing to bring the perpetrators of such attacks to justice and that this will further encourage them. Arben Salihu, member of the Association of Journalists of Kosovo, said since October 13 there have been 18 attacks against reporters, compared to a total of 17 attacks in 2016.
