The European Union has to clarify to the Serbian public that a request for “full normalization of relations” with Pristina, on Serbia’s path to the EU “is not necessarily recognition of Kosovo,” although it might happen at a certain moment in the future, analysis of the European Parliament General Directorate for Foreign Affairs said, Serbian media reported.
The recommendations in this document to the EU and the EP underline that “public in Serbia weakly understands what exactly the EU is requesting when it comes to Kosovo, including delineation of understanding between “the full normalization” and “the recognition,” adding that “Kosovo is the most disputable issue” in relations and negotiations between the EU and Serbia.
That is why, “the EU has to make efforts to improve communications and highlight that negotiations of Serbia to become a member of the EU should focus on “full normalization of the two parties (Belgrade and Pristina),” Serbian media further reported.
The document further said given different relations and interests of Serbia when it comes to the EU, USA, China and Russia, it is necessary “for the EU to make sure circumstances that happened in Ukraine in 2013, do not get repeated in Serbia in 2018”.
“This further requires that Serbia’s accession to the EU is shaped differently than paths of other countries heading to the EU,” Serbian media reported.
