Ruzica Simic, from the NGO Women’s Right, sent a protest letter in support to the victim of domestic violence, Katarina Mitic, from Donja Gusterica, whose husband was sentenced to three years and eight months in prison for attempting to murder her, KIM Radio reports.

In the protest letter Simic underlined it is high time to stop justifying gender-based violence and domestic violence, by accepting mitigating circumstances in automatic and routine manner, as well as issuing mild sentences, even below the minimum required by the law.

She added, an objective and impartial investigation is needed in cases of violence against women and their murders, appropriate punishment, but also institutional accountability in treating domestic violence cases.

“There is nothing a woman can do to deserve the violence. The violence against women is unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest terms as well as adequately punished,” Simic underlined.
