Terraces and businesses along the pedestrian zone in northern part of Mitrovica were decorated with Serbian flags on Thursday evening, reports Belgrade based news agency Tanjug. This morning Tanjug correspondent from Mitrovica reports on KFOR vehicles deployment on the Ibar bridge.
Citizens told Tanjug that the flags have been displayed in response to the announced adoption of the law on the formation of Kosovo army in the Assembly, planned for this morning. Citizens say the move came as a response to US flags placed lately in Pristina, the Mitrovica South and elsewhere in southern Kosovo.
“If they could put up their flags in Bosniac Mahala, why wouldn’t we put up ours? I think this is still our territory and that it’s completely correct to display our flags,” a northern Mitrovica resident told Tanjug. He and other residents told Tanjug that they expected the north (Mitrovica) to remain Serbian territory – “regardless of how the situation develops, whether there will be an army of Kosovo or not.”
On the eve of today’s announcement of the formation of Kosovo army, several KFOR vehicles were stationed at the bridge dividing the north and south of Mitrovica.
At the entrance to the South Mitrovica, four armoured vehicles and one truck and a jeep were parked of the KFOR’s Polish contingent, reports Tanjug from the scene.
The Kosovo Police are also present on the bridge. In Mitrovica the situation is calm this morning, reports Tanjug.
