74 women and children, victims of domestic violence, found shelter this year at “Safe House” center in Gjakova. Sakibe Doli from this center says that women who are accommodated in this shelter,  apart from housing and rehabilitation, are also professionally trained for different crafts, in order to become independent and integrate in society.

Five months have passed since S.B. left her home to settle in the “Safe House” in Gjakova. The 37-year-old, on condition of anonymity, confessed to Radio Kosova that it was the constant violence that forced her to report the case to the police, then to be placed in the shelter where she was feeling safe and being treated well. But, in spite of this, this mother of a child says that she plans to leave the shelter that took refuge in the toughest days. S.B., in order to become independent, is attending a tailoring course. Sakibe Doli from the “Safe House” Shelter indicates that several courses are offered to victims in order for them to become independent and reintegrate.

“They are offered tailoring, haircut and office administration training. Then, here at the shelter, we have preparation of dough and confectionery. We also have a beekeeping mini-factory, where honey and some lotions are produced from honey products, “she said.

According to Doli, the biggest problem for these women to become independent and reintegrate in society is lack of financial support by the state. She adds that very often they had to pay the rent of these women after they left the shelter and calls on institutions for financial support of the victims of domestic violence.
