Dusan Janjic, head of the Belgrade-based Forum for Ethnic Relations, said in an interview to Radio Kosova that the historic agreement between Serbia and Kosovo will be reached in 2020. Janjic said the letters that U.S. President Donald Trump sent to the presidents of Kosovo and Serbia confirmed the start of the end of the process for the final settlement. Janjic said: “the U.S. was always present and informed about the course of dialogue. They are now more engaged, and I think they will be represented by Wes Mitchell and Mathew Palmer. Germany too I think will have their representative. The letters from President Trump have two sides: they say that the U.S. wants to accelerate and conclude the process … President Trump, through his letter, has confirmed the beginning of the end of the process for an agreement between Kosovo and Serbia, as they have done with Kosovo’s recognition and the objective to join international organizations. As you know, when a world superpower, namely its president, signs such a letter, then the party that does not go to sign the agreement in Washington, as he has suggested, should think carefully about the consequences. This would trigger negative reactions from the U.S. So this is a very powerful letter that obliges the parties, including the U.S., and this has certainly has domestic implications to, as Trump wants to gain an advantage over the Democrats with his engagement in the Balkans. He will use this as a success in the new elections the same way that the Clinton administration did in his second election as president.
