Radio Free Europe quotes a report released by the United States Intelligence Community stating that the possibility of an open conflict and Russian influence remain the key challenges to the security in the Western Balkans. According to the report, Russia will try to use ethnic tensions and corruption in the Balkans to prevent the region from progressing towards their Euro-Atlantic integrations processes. “The Western Balkans almost certainly will remain at some risk of low-level violence and possibly open military conflict throughout 2019. Russia will seek to exploit ethnic tensions and high levels of corruption to hinder the ability of countries in this region to move toward the EU and NATO,” reads U.S. Intelligence Community’s Worldwide Threat Assessment.
