Publicist Veton Surroi commented on the statement made by President of Kosovo Hashim Thaci that Kosovo’s current borders are not a result of the will of its people but rather a product of Yugoslavia saying that such an observation could be made by an “amateur historian” but not by a constitutional representative of Kosovo. Surroi remarked that Kosovo’s current borders are part of the expression of will by its citizens for an independent state and that independence was declared on these borders following a process of international protectorate and negotiations. Furthermore, he said, the International Court of Justice has ruled that declaration of independence was not in violation to the international law. “Discussion of borders between Kosovo and Serbia, as two countries with an unresolved conflict is legally a reopening of the entire process that brought about independence,” Surroi wrote. “An amateur historian has the right to be ignorant. Ignorance cannot protect a president of a country from legal and political repercussions. Europe’s graveyards, including those in Kosovo, are full of victims of amateur historians and ignorant presidents,” Surroi concluded.
