Kosovo and the UN mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) has not interrupted all contacts and communication, as stated on Wednesday by the Prime Minister of Kosovo Ramush Haradinaj.
The Prime Minister Haradinaj and the government of Kosovo said they have cut off communication and do not recognize the UN mission UNMIK, as representing structure of Kosovo.
The Office of the UN Mission in Kosovo functions also as a communication office between Kosovo institutions with the International Police Agency – INTERPOL.
UNMIK Spokesperson, Sanam Dolatshahi, told Radio Free Europe that UNMIK continues to play this role.
“UNMIK continues to fulfill its role as mediators with INTERPOL, in close coordination with Kosovo Police and EULEX, as required to ensure that all functions are carried out in an efficient manner. We will not comment on specific cases,” Dolatshahi said.
The UN mission installed in Kosovo in 1999. This mission is neutral to the status of Kosovo and acts in accordance with the UN resolution 1244, which was a compromise between western countries and Russia, in order to bring the conflict in Kosovo to an end.
Following the declaration of independence of Kosovo, in February 2018, official Pristina has requested for the UNMIK mission to reform and remain only as a UN representative office in Kosovo.
