Political commentator Shkelzen Maliqi said today that pressure is being applied on both Kosovo and Serbia to unblock the process of dialogue. Maliqi wrote in a Facebook post, “the claim that foreign diplomats are pressuring only Kosovo on the tariff, and that there is no pressure on Serbia, does not stand. Diplomats from the U.S. and Germany, but also top diplomats from the EU, are pressuring Serbia to recognize Kosovo’s independence saying that this is a requirement for its EU integration. Western diplomacy views Kosovo’s recognition by Belgrade as part of continued dialogue that must conclude soon with a reconciliation agreement and mutual recognition between Kosovo and Serbia. Dialogue is a process that must produce binding agreements between the two sides and which eliminate the reasons behind the tariff on Serbian goods introduced by the Kosovo Government. Meanwhile, the Serbian Government is using the tariff, namely it calls for its removal before dialogue can resume, and keeps the process blocked in the meantime. Therefore, pressure from diplomats to suspend the tariff and unblock dialogue are not one-sided, but they include both Kosovo and Serbia with the imperative for an agreement on mutual recognition. The suspension of the tariff will suspend the Serbian blockade of dialogue and of the agreement, which if reached, will result in Kosovo’s recognition by Serbia”.
