A former British ambassador to Yugoslavia has defended the prospect of land swaps between Serbia and Kosovo as preferable to the risk of the dispute not being brought to an end at all.

Sir Ivor Roberts, who was the UK’s ambassador to Belgrade in the 1990s before becoming British ambassador to Ireland and Italy, said the two countries should be allowed to work out whatever solution suited them without any outside pressure.

Writing in this week’s edition of the Catholic weekly Tablet magazine, Roberts said the pressure on Belgrade and Pristina not to discuss changing their borders made little sense given that – were Israel and Palestine to reach an agreement – the world would applaud, whether or not the deal involved changing existing internationally recognized borders.
