Schwendiman: Specialist Court to be functional asap (Tanjug)

Lead Prosecutor of the European Union Special Investigative Task Force (SITF) David Schwendiman welcomed the Kosovo assembly's adoption of constitutional amendments and the law paving the way for the setting up of the specialist court, as a step towards addressing the claims of war crimes committed by the KLA, and called for the establishment of specialist chambers and prosecutor's office as soon as possible.

“The Kosovo Assembly adopted the Constitutional Amendments and the Law paving the way for the establishment of the Specialist Chambers and the Specialist Prosecutor's Office. I am encouraged by the outcome of this vote as it brings Kosovo one step closer to addressing, once and for all, the very serious allegations contained in the Council of Europe report of January 2011,” Schwendiman said in a release.

He emphasized that the process of establishing the Specialist Chambers and the Specialist Prosecutor's Office is not yet complete, and that further steps still need to be taken.

“We encourage all actors involved to pursue their efforts so that this judicial mechanism can be functional as early as possible,” the SITF lead prosecutor stressed.

The Law and the Specialist Chambers and Specialist Prosecutor's Office are what we need to take things to the next level, the release states.
