Kosovo threatening us with sanctions (Blic)
Pristina-based media reported that the decision to introduce sanctions to Serbia could enter into force in March, hence Kosovo government will discuss this issue at a meeting of CEFTA members in Brussels on 3 March.
According to ‘Koha ditore’, Kosovo companies dealing with the import of oil derivative are experiencing difficulties, in addition Belgrade has blocked export of drinks produced in Kosovo to Serbia. At the time tensions between Belgrade and Pristina are not subsiding because the agreement on the creation of the Association/Community of Serb-majority municipalities has not been reached yet, a question emerges as to whether the Kosovo side is trying to raise these issues to a political level only. Such speculation was presented by the Director of the Serbian Government’s Office for Kosovo Marko Djuric, who argues that the intentions of the government of Kosovo are politically motivated.
“Serbia pledges for free and unhindered flow of people and merchandise. During previous months we have taken additional steps aimed at faster registration of travelers and merchandise,” said Djuric, and added ‘if provisional institutions continue with opposite steps, we will respond and protect our citizens no matter their place of residence”.
Sanctions would undoubtedly cause damage to both sides, however last year Serbia exported goods amounting to EUR 430 million to Kosovo, whereas Kosovo exported only EUR 25 million to Serbia.
